Meeting the members of the convent
On the morning after Father Cooper's arrival, the convent's devotees arise to attend a special communion service. Before Father Cooper consecrates the Eucharist, he leads everyone in prayer, reminding them about sin, forgiveness, and promise of salvation. A few of the nuns and the resident priest bow their heads seemingly in prayer, but Father Cooper wonders they do this out of devotion or shame.
One by one, the nuns and the priest step up to the alter to receive communion. The Reverend Mother is the last to receive the sacrament; as she stands before Father Cooper she locks her gaze with his and he feels a rising temptation the he has long sought to avoid on his travels.
